RIP Randy Woodward

My uncle Randall "Randy" Woodward passed away Monday afternoon October 12, 2009 at Avante of Mt Dora in Mt Dora, FL due to liver failure. His daughter Kelly arrived in FL Sunday evening to spend his last hours by his side. On his birthday this month he would have been 59 yrs old. He will be cremated and his remains buried next to my dad in the family cemetery in North Dakota at a date to be announced.
======================
Randall 'Randy' WoodwardBy Obituary | Peninsula Clarion
Friday, November 06, 2009
Soldotna resident Randall 'Randy' Woodward died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Avente of Mount Dora nursing home in Mount Dora, Fla. He was 58.

His daughter, Kelly, arrived in Florida, Oct. 11, spending his last hours by his side along with his sister, Pam.

Memorial services will be held in Edgeley, N.D., in August where his ashes will be buried at the family cemetery.

Mr. Woodward was born Oct. 25, 1950, in Edgeley, to George and Gloria Woodward. He lived in Omaha, Neb., before moving to Soldotna with his family in 1983. Randy worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator for most of his career.

"It wasn't long after moving to Soldotna, that he became an Alaskan at heart. He bought his family a small piece of land just north of where Fred Meyer is now, and with just enough spruce trees on the land, he and his family built a beautiful log home," his family said. "With Soldotna Creek just a short walk through the trees, evening fishing excursions with his family and nephew were something he loved to do. As his kids aged Randy aged with them adapting to their passions, weather it be riding passenger during the the fall hunting season, or 4-wheeling in the wilderness, clam digging, camping, fishing, sitting around a warm bonfire."

"Seeing a smile on his kids face meant the world to him, and as long as he was with his family he washappy. As a grandpa he loved to tell his grandchildren stories about his adventures and the wildlife he encountered. As an uncle he enjoyed spending time with his nephew, weather it be fishing or just relaxing he always enjoyed his company. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed telling and receiving a good joke. He moved to Florida in 2002 where he enjoyed the warmer weather and new adventures. Dad loved to travel and see new places. His sister, Pam lovingly took care of him during his illness, making sure his needs were attended to. Pam is an RN at Avante of Mount Dora where Randy resided until his passing. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten."

Mr. Woodward was preceded in death by his father, George Woodward; and brother, Timothy (Tim) Woodward.

He is survived by his mother, Gloria Woodward; brother, Steve Woodward and his wife, Donna, of Nebraska; sister, Pamela Poe and her partner, Debby, of Florida; wife of 32 years, Michelle (Mikey) Woodward; and sister-in-law, Terri Woodward of Soldotna; his children, sons, Scott Woodward and his wife, Mindi, and David Woodward and his wife, Lindsey, of Oregon,; daughter, Kelly Johnson, and her husband, Nathan of Soldotna; grandchildren, Ellyce and Hunter Woodward and Alexandra and Cameron Johnson, all of Soldotna, and Nevan and Marshall Woodward of Oregon; nephew, Mike Woodward, and his fianc, Rebecca Kesinger of Soldotna; niece, Angela Lindsey, and her husband, Justin, of Missouri; as well as many other nieces, nephews.

Arrangements were made by Cremation Services of Mid Florida.

Picking Berries

We found several Alaskan wild berries on our hike. We found: Watermellon Berries, Crowberries, Highbush Cranberries, Lowbush Cranberries, Bunchberries, Kinnikinnick Bearberries, Bog Blueberries, Red-berried Elder Elderberries, Rosehip, and wild raspberries, . The Bog Blueberries made delicious muffins.

Hike to Russian River Falls

Several of the Woodwards joined us on a hike to the Russian River Falls. Zaylee rode in a pack on my back and sang songs most of the way. It was an easy family hike and only about 2.3 miles to the overlook of the salmon jumping their way up the river. We ate lunch there and soaked up the scenery.

Auny Pammy

I did the math at it has been almost 20 years since I've seen my Aunt Pammy. We've been to Orlando, she's been to KC, Omaha, and AK - yet we still missed each other every time. Although I was very happy to see her I was also sad because she looks like her brother - my dad. It was great catching up with her, wish we had more time though.

Sarah Sue

Wow what a great reunion. It's been over 8 years since I've given Sarah a hug and saw her pretty smile in person. Sarah is remarried and living in Sebastian, FL. No kids or pets but loves to surf and suntan. She has been helping take care of Ashley Primmer's 9 yr old son Austin during the week. It was wonderful to see Sarah and I hope it's not another 8 yrs before I see her again.

Tim Update

I wanted to give everyone an update on my Dad. I've been in Alaska since March 18th to spend his final days by his side. While I've been here his health has slowly been declining. He sleeps more than ever before but is still able to do most things on his own. Last week my mom arranged for his doctors to sign an order for Hospice. On Thursday we met his new nurse Jane and then on Friday we met Lane - the social worker. Both women are very nice and my dad seemed comfortable around them.

Jane will be visiting my dad weekly and more often as the time goes on. They left us some material to read to help us deal with what will be happening with my dad during the final stages of this battle. The booklet I want to share is called "Gone From My Sight". Please keep my dad and family in your prayers.

Puppies!

During my stay Aunt Mimi (Mindy) has graciously been babysitting Zaylee while I've been at work. I cannot describe how thankful I am for this. Aunt Mimi has two Labradors (Sadie and Charlie) which have become Zaylee's best friends. It took a few days for her to warm up to them, but now she chases them around yelling "puppies, puppies" and loves to give them treats.

Redoubt Volcano Erupts

Angela, Zaylee and family are currently in Soldotna
map
more info, webcams
----
UPDATE 3/25 7:53 AM Alaska (Angela)
There was another small eruption about two hours ago. The ash plume was only 10,000 ft high and blew N/NW. There have been reports of trace amounts of ash in the air in Anchorage per the Air Quality Team, but nothing on the ground.
----
UPDATE 3/24 9:49 AM Alaska (Angela)
The volcano is still under a RED alert and is being watched closely. They are predicting several more large eruptions. Here are some pics from the eruptions this week and several from back in 1989-1990.
----
UPDATE 10:15 PM Alaska (Angela)
The volcano erupted again tonight just after 7:30 PM. The ash plume reached over 60,000 feet and is blowing north west. We will be lucky again with the sixth eruption.
----
UPDATE 5:58 PM Alaska (Angela)
Our power was restored after two hours and it was reported to have nothing to do with the volcano's eruption. We have been lucky so far and not received any ash fall from this series of eruptions. At this time we are still at level RED meaning another eruption may happen at anytime. There have been several earthquakes at the base of the mountain since the last eruption but we have felt none of them.
----
UPDATE 11:20 AM Central (Justin)
The local power plant went down (not sure why yet) and the entire city (and more) is without power. Someone rushed Tim a battery pack for his oxygen tank. They do not have a generator, but other family there does. Since she is without internet, she can not work remote. They are considering going out for supplies.
Some ash is falling and Angela says she smells sulphur pretty strong.
They are expecting snowfall today.
----
UPDATE - 7:30 AM Alaska (Angela)
Mt. Redoubt erupted again and they are predicting it will go several more times. The ash plume has reached 60,000 ft so we are closely watching the wind patterns to see where the ash will fall. As of right now they are predicting it will all fall north of Anchorage but it could change. When I step outside at my parent's house I smell sulfur but don't see any ash on the snow.

When Mt. Redoubt erupted in 1989 I was in the 4th grade and it dropped about 5 inches of ash on Soldotna. We were given masks to wear when leaving school. It was a mess outside and we were told to stay indoors and not drive unless necessary. It was neat to watch out the window at the sunny day and in a matter of 20 minutes it was pitch black while the ash covered the sky and began to fall. My parents had to replace the air filters in their cars that week because they were full of ash.

Tim Update

Hi everyone - as some of you may know, Zaylee and I arrived in Alaska on Wednesday to spend some time with my dad who is still fighting pancreatic cancer. Last Friday he had surgery to replace the hose in his chest that drains the fluid as it builds up in his body. After this round of surgery he was having a very difficult time getting his pain under control. Since I've been here, he has managed to get his medication back on track and appears to be feeling better.

He looks skinner than ever now and has lost some color but he still hangs in there day by day. He now has an oxygen machine and an inhaler to assist with his breathing because he becomes very winded just talking. His appetite fluctuates, and the reactions to the medications sometimes make it hard to keep food down. He has a new bed that allows him to sleep elevated and I can tell that it helps because he is able to sleep through most of the night.

Even with the seriousness of the situation he still has his sense of humor. We've been enjoying some time together as he tells me stories of his life and the things he has learned along the way. Zaylee was unsure at first but has started to warm up to her Papa and it won't be long before she'll embrace him and give him hugs.

Please keep my dad and family in your thoughts and prayers. It's still very winter up here with lots of snow and below zero temps. I can tell Dad's situation has taken its toll with some of my family that has been caring for him so long. I hope Zaylee and I can bring some warm midwest sunshine up and contribute a little something for everyone.
