Tim Turns 55

Today my dad turned fifty-five and I'm so glad I got to spend it with him. We started our day with our first ever family portraits. Later in the afternoon we had a nice bar-b-que at my parent's house. Blowing out all those candles nearly set off the smoke detector.

Kyla's First Day of Kindergarten

Kyla has been so very excited about this day all summer. She packed her own lunch last night and went to bed early. Marcie and I walked her in to school and attended the opening ceremony which included bagpipes, prayer and a hymn. It was a special day for me too and I'm happy we've decided to enroll her here. Whitefield Academy is ranked as one of the top ten private schools in the KC area. They use a classical Christian curriculum and consistently average in the 90th percentile nationally in standardized testing. It's a small school, with a wonderful staff.
At the end of the day, Kyla was really tired.

Halibut Fishing

Sunday I went on a halibut charter and will be coming back to Missouri with some more fish for our freezer. The drive down to Homer was beautiful. We spotted 4 moose, two of them were babies. On the short ride out to the fishing spot we saw several whales and a sea otter. The weather was great and we managed to catch and keep 17 halibut. Scott caught a small sand shark and I caught a five foot skate, which felt like pulling up a piece of plywood from the ocean bottom. My arms are sore today but it was well worth it.

Zaylee is 7 Months Old

I love hearing Zaylee jabber to herself and others. She is growing so quickly and you can see her carefuly observing everything around her. She loves to grab at anything within her reach. Her two bottom teeth are growing nicely and are quite sharp! She has tried several solids including rice cereal, sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, green beans, bananas, apple juice and teething biscuits. She is still sleeping through the night and taking two naps during the day. We have been practicing standing much more, maybe we'll have an early walker. She also is teaching herself how to use her new sippy cup.

Zaylee and Grandpa

Zaylee has been enjoying her special time with Grandpa. It's great to see them interact. While sitting on his lap she grabs for everything within her reach.

Last Friday my dad met with a pancreas surgeon and was told the irregular mass was indeed cancer and that it was in a position where it could not be removed. The surgeon recommended my dad meet with the doctors at the cancer clinic in Anchorage to discuss radiation and chemo therapy options. My dad has an appointment this Friday.

Through it all my dad has a great attitude and is anxious to know the next steps.

Organ Donor

I did something last Friday that I hope you will consider too. I have a friend who started a new job with the Gift of Life organization and I decided to go out to their website and read about them. Did you know that another name is added to the national donor waiting list every 13 minutes, and 17 people per day die due to a lack of available organs? One organ donor can potentially save 8 lives and enhance more than 50 lives through tissue donation.
I had already signed my drivers license as an organ donor years ago, but I discovered there is also a more official donor registry you can sign up for. So I registered as an organ donor in Missouri online. It's real easy, and no cost. Sign up in your state if you haven't already!

Update on my Dad

The results of my dad's most recent biopsy have determined he has a 47 by 31 mm cystic lesion in his pancreatic body as well as a 38 by 30 mm irregular mass. We are awaiting cytology, path and tumor marker results of the mass and should hear something soon. Once the results are in they've recommended my dad see a surgeon to discuss the next steps. My dad is in good spirits but obvious pain.

Fishing With Bears and Birds

One of the highlights of the Alaska trip was silver salmon fishing with the bears and birds. We saw two brown bears and two black. Also saw this great bald eagle standing proud, and seagulls, ducks, and puffins. Our guide grilled us some fresh salmon on the boat and we watched a brown bear quickly approach.

Checking in

Hi there friends and family,
My trip to San Francisco went well. Angela and Zaylee joined me about mid week, so that was nice to see them. Among several exhibitions, we visited Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Union Square, Ghirardelli Square, the Metreon, the Westfield Center, and Chinatown twice. So as you can see, I've been getting a lot of exercise. I figured it all up and estimate I walked around 12.5 miles of the hilly city the whole trip, some of it pushing a stroller. Combine that with my new diet, and I've lost nearly 10 pounds in two weeks.

We are preparing for our trip to Alaska soon. Kyla seems excited as this will be her first visit. I'm scheduled for three fishing exhibits and will likely bring home some salmon and halibut. It will be good to visit with the Woodward family and spend some time with Angie's dad.

Zaylee is a real joy at 6 1/2 months. I remember Kyla at this age and how fun it is from here on out. Two of Zaylee's teeth are starting to come in on the bottom side. I love how she recognizes me and smiles all the time. She also blows spit bubbles and drools.

Kyla enjoys being a big sister and a helper. She already helps babysit on occasion as Ang and I do errands around the house. She's getting excited for school and meeting some new friends.

I talked to my Dad today who says he is now a school bus driver. And my sister Brandi also took a new job as a secretary.
